Makai Voyager is a fully-interactive, PC-based, geospatially enabled software that can fuse and visualize large, multi-variate data sets that change in space (x,y,z) and time (t). The software can simultaneously visualize imagery, bathymetry/terrain, and true volumetric (voxel) data in a fully-interactive geo-referenced mode. Makai Voyager supports a wide range of geospatial formats and includes a resampling module which allows the user to merge imagery and elevation data from a variety of sources and formats in order to have complete coverage of an area of interest. The coverage area can be exported as a single GeoTIFF file for viewing in other GIS applications, or a series of Level of Detail (LOD) images can be created for viewing in Makai Voyager. The software has applications in meteorology, military tracking and modeling, biological tracking, ground/sea water contamination plumes, and hazardous materials dispersion.

Terrain
IMAGERY & TERRAIN

Import georeferenced elevation and imagery GIS data in a fully-interactive virtual world. Navigate under the sea to view bathymetry or view GPS tracks from seals, sharks, or data from autonomous sensor-enabled gliders.

Makai Voyager uses Level of Detail (LOD) technology to support high resolution imagery and terrain while maintaining high frame rates for user interactivity.

A variety of tools are included to assist in analyzing and creating reports, such as a measurement tool, a real-time movie maker, and a high resolution image capture to name a few.

GIS & Data Fusion
GIS & DATA FUSION

Makai Voyager provides native support for 18 different GIS formats with the option to expand support for over 140 different spatial data formats. The process of importing imagery, elevation, or 3D data is simple regardless of the type or complexity of the data.

Using the Resampler module, the user can reproject and merge imagery and elevation data from a variety of sources and formats in order to have complete coverage of an area of interest. Fused data can be visualized as a single image or as a multi-resolution LOD tileset.

4D/5D Volume Data
VOLUME

Dynamically view volumetric data and watch it change in time and space. Modify the display characteristics based on specific variables and value ranges. Use intersection functions to analyze how variables interact with one another, or create slices and cutting planes to view data inside the volume. Peel back one variable and view the interface between multiple variables.

Makai Voyager fully supports volumetric data consisting of voxels. Typical applications include scientific modeling (meteorological and oceanographic prediction models, soil contamination, and military detection models).

Flow data with time component.
FLOW

Visualize three dimensional wind or current flow data as it changes in time. Place seed points to watch how the flow will carry the particles through space and time. Create vertical seed rakes to view how the flow changes with elevation.

Terrain
OTEC PLUME MODEL

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a technology which uses temperature differences in seawater to generate electricity. Makai Voyager is being used to visualize model results of the seawater discharge plume from OTEC plants and how the plume may affect phytoplankton growth.

U.S. NAVY RESEARCH

The U.S. Navy collects data from marine sensors and runs the data through forecasting models to produce predictions for a number of ocean variables (e.g., temperature, salinity). Makai Voyager is being used to visualize the output from the models providing the U.S. Navy researchers with a tool to analyze how variables change in space and time and interact with each other.

4D/5D Volume Data
BIOLOGICAL/SENSOR TRACKING

Marine biologists can use Makai Voyager to track animals in an interactive, geo-referenced, 3D environment. Makai Voyager's timeline can be used to determine the exact position of an animal at any given time relative to ships, buoys, or at-sea platforms.

METEOROLOGY

Meterological research requires the use of complex numerical models and large data sets to analyze and predict weather patterns. Makai Voyager is capable of visualizing these time varying large volumetric data sets (grids > 5123) on a desktop workstation thus providing scientific organizations with a simple solution to visualize results from predictive models.
